RICHMOND FOOD NOT BOMBS
Food Not Bombs is an all-volunteer global movement that shares free vegetarian and vegan meals as a protest against war and poverty. Our ideology is corporate and government priorities are skewed. There is no need to allow hunger to persist in the midst of abundance. Each chapter collects surplus food that would otherwise go to waste from grocery stores, bakeries, markets, and local farmers. Then we prepare community meals which are served for free to anyone who wants to eat. We do not pass judgment about food access or poverty levels
Each chapter is independent and autonomous and makes decisions using the consensus process.
Food Not Bombs is dedicated to nonviolence and sees "Food as a Right Not a Privilege."
Food Not Bombs works to call attention to poverty and homelessness in society by sharing food in public and physically accessible places. It is our intention to facilitate a community space for those who may or may not have access to nutritional foods in their daily lives, who may or may not have access to a kitchen, who may or may not be currently housed. Anyone who wants to cook may cook, and anyone who wants to eat may eat. Food Not Bombs strives to include everyone.
SOLIDARITY NOT CHARITY
THE RICHMOND VA CHAPTER WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1993 AND HAS PROUDLY SERVED TO THE GREATER LOCAL COMMUNITY FOR OVER 25 YEARS.
OVER 50,000 MEALS SERVED TO DATE !!!
Our volunteer base as well as the community we serve is made up of a variety of folks including folks who identify as queer, trans, nuerodiverse, and people of color. Many of our volunteers also depend on our org as a source of food and many of the folks who receive food also end up volunteering.
Volunteer and donation opportunities are open year-round on a revolving door basis. We offer credit for court-mandated community service hours, student learning hours, etc. We are a non-hierarchical community and all our volunteers are invited to participate in meetings.
